Teach You A Lesson Episode 1 Recap & Review: Na Hwa-jin Takes a Brutal Stand Against School Bullies

Teach You A Lesson Episode 1 Recap

The opening moments of Teach You A Lesson Episode 1 waste no time showing how dark things have become at Daehan High School. Student Gyeong-min watches in horror as his classmate, Park Dae-seok, jumps from the school building and dies.

The tragedy doesn’t happen without warning. Through flashbacks, we learn that Dae-seok became the latest target of the school’s bullying culture after speaking up against Jun-hyeong. His mistake was defending a temporary teacher when Jun-hyeong treated the instructor disrespectfully. That single act turned Dae-seok into an outcast.

Before Dae-seok, Gyeong-min had been the student everyone picked on. Once the bullies shifted their attention elsewhere, he was temporarily spared. Watching what happened to Dae-seok filled him with guilt, but he also felt powerless. Reporting the abuse seemed pointless because even the teachers were terrified of Jun-hyeong and the influence of his wealthy father.

After Dae-seok’s death, Gyeong-min hopes justice will finally arrive. Instead, nothing changes. The police investigation goes nowhere, and Jun-hyeong’s group continues ruling the school through fear. Eventually, Gyeong-min once again becomes the primary target.

The situation pushes him to a breaking point. Standing on the edge of the building, he considers ending his own life. At the last second, panic takes over and he steps back.

Things only get worse from there.

One day, Jun-hyeong’s friend Gwang-su brutally attacks Gyeong-min in the hallway while other students simply watch. Nobody intervenes. Nobody even pretends to care.

That’s when Na Hwa-jin suddenly appears.

Without hesitation, Hwa-jin beats Gwang-su and stops the assault. Jun-hyeong immediately accuses him of attacking a student and orders everyone nearby to record the incident. Hwa-jin couldn’t care less. In fact, he knocks Gwang-su down again before calmly introducing himself.

He reveals that he works as an inspector for the newly established Korean Educational Rights Protection Bureau, also known as the ERPB.

His arrival changes the atmosphere instantly.

Meeting with the principal, Hwa-jin openly accuses the school administration of helping cover up Dae-seok’s suicide case. According to him, teachers and administrators bribed authorities to keep the investigation buried. He explains that the ERPB was created specifically to handle situations like this and claims he has broad authority to deal with school bullies however necessary.

Principal Kim privately asks him to stay away from the case. The reason is simple: Jun-hyeong’s father, Assemblyman Ryu Gwang-pil, is too powerful. The principal believes the school will benefit if Gwang-pil succeeds politically.

Hwa-jin refuses to cooperate. Instead, he announces that he will personally become the homeroom teacher for Dae-seok’s class. His first day in the classroom is unforgettable.

When he asks students about Dae-seok, one of them makes a joke about the dead student. Hwa-jin immediately punishes him. Then he orders the entire class into a plank position as discipline. Jun-hyeong protests, only to find himself humiliated in front of everyone.

For the first time, somebody isn’t afraid of him.

Later during lunch, Jun-hyeong attempts to skip ahead in line. Hwa-jin stops him. In response, Jun-hyeong deliberately contaminates the cafeteria food with his hands. Hwa-jin reacts instantly, forcing him to clean up the mess and take responsibility for his actions.

Watching Jun-hyeong lose control of the situation was one of the most satisfying parts of the episode.

The conflict escalates when Jun-hyeong refuses to help clean the classroom after school and goes home instead. Hwa-jin follows him there and directly confronts his father about his son’s behavior.

Predictably, Jun-hyeong plays the victim and claims he’s being harassed.

Even with Gwang-pil issuing warnings, Hwa-jin refuses to retreat.

Soon afterward, he drags Jun-hyeong back to school and assigns him toilet-cleaning duty. Desperate to escape punishment, Jun-hyeong smashes his own head against a toilet bowl and attempts to frame Hwa-jin for assault.

The following day, Gwang-pil storms into the school and publicly accuses Hwa-jin of attacking his son. He even invokes the name of Minister Choi Gang-seok, the man responsible for creating the ERPB.

Hwa-jin remains completely unfazed.

Meanwhile, Jun-hyeong’s friends target Gyeong-min again. They believe he secretly reported them to the ERPB and beat him severely.

The attack pushes Gyeong-min back toward the rooftop. This time, however, Hwa-jin arrives before tragedy can happen.

Their conversation becomes one of the most important moments of the episode. Hwa-jin encourages him to keep fighting, build friendships, and seek help from people around him. Gyeong-min struggles to believe any of that will matter because Jun-hyeong’s influence seems impossible to overcome.

Elsewhere, Gwang-pil meets Minister Gang-seok and demands the dissolution of the ERPB. He makes it clear that protecting his son matters more than anything else.

Not long afterward, his world begins collapsing.

While attending a campaign event, Gwang-pil is suddenly bombarded by allegations that spread across the internet. Reports involving bribery, sexual assault, and other crimes begin surfacing. Journalists confront him publicly, leaving him visibly shaken.

Then he encounters Gang-seok waiting inside an auditorium.

At that moment, he realizes what happened. The ERPB exposed his secrets. His attempt to shield Jun-hyeong has backfired spectacularly.

Within a short time, Gwang-pil’s political career is destroyed and he is arrested. Investigators also uncover Jun-hyeong’s connection to Dae-seok’s death along with his long history of bullying.

Gang-seok later asks Hwa-jin to wrap up the case as quickly as possible.

Back at school, the power dynamic completely flips.

The students who once feared Jun-hyeong now abandon him. He becomes the new outcast after his father’s downfall. Gyeong-min feels guilty for staying silent when Dae-seok suffered, but Hwa-jin reassures him that the blame belongs to the bullies, not the bystanders who were trapped by fear.

Unfortunately, Jun-hyeong isn’t ready to accept responsibility.

Consumed by anger, he locks several of his former friends inside a classroom and attempts to burn the room down.

I honestly couldn’t look away during this sequence.

Hwa-jin arrives and forces Jun-hyeong to confront the reality of what he’s done. Under pressure, Jun-hyeong finally breaks down. The confidence and arrogance disappear, replaced by panic and desperation.

Hwa-jin reminds him of the person he drove to death.

A flashback reveals the full tragedy behind Dae-seok’s suicide.

Dae-seok and his father previously tried reporting Jun-hyeong’s actions, but the school refused to investigate. Because of Gwang-pil’s influence, Dae-seok’s father eventually loses his business. Feeling responsible for the suffering around him, Dae-seok chooses to end his life.

The revelation makes the entire situation even more heartbreaking.

Back in the present, Hwa-jin tells Jun-hyeong that he must live with the consequences of what he has done. Soon after, Jun-hyeong and his friends are arrested, and Dae-seok’s case is officially reopened.

Gyeong-min later reflects that he never saw Hwa-jin again after those events. Still, the students of Daehan High School continue remembering the bullies who finally faced justice.

The episode closes on a quieter note as Gang-seok and Hwa-jin visit the grave of Choi Ga-yun and pay their respects.

Episode 1 Review

What immediately grabbed me about Teach You A Lesson was how unapologetically direct it is. The series doesn’t spend much time debating whether the bullies deserve consequences. Instead, it focuses on what happens when someone finally steps in and refuses to be intimidated.

Na Hwa-jin dominates the episode from the moment he appears. Every scene involving him carries energy because nobody knows what he’s going to do next. One minute he’s acting like a teacher, and the next he’s confronting powerful politicians without blinking.

The story also does a good job showing how deeply fear has infected the school. Students stay silent, teachers look away, and administrators prioritize influence over justice. That environment makes Dae-seok’s fate feel even more tragic.

The biggest mystery heading into future episodes revolves around Choi Ga-yun. The final scene clearly suggests she holds major significance for both Hwa-jin and Gang-seok. The series hasn’t revealed the details yet, but it’s obvious that her death continues to motivate their actions.

Episode 1 delivers an emotional opening, a memorable lead character, and a clear sense of direction. If the rest of the season maintains this level of intensity, Teach You A Lesson could become a very addictive watch.
