The Legend of Kitchen Soldier Episode 7 opens right where the previous events left off. Thanks to Chef’s Eye, Seong-jae manages to find a safer path while hanging on the cliffside, and it doesn’t take long before Dong-hyun catches up with him.
As they make their way back to camp, they notice the medical team collecting drinking water from a nearby stream. The sight immediately raises questions, and the information is passed along to Seok-ho.
Before long, the truth behind the recent food poisoning incident is finally uncovered. The meals served by the kitchen were never the problem. The contaminated water was responsible all along. The discovery puts the medical team in an uncomfortable position, especially Min-gu, since they had blamed the cooks before conducting a proper investigation. They receive a stern reprimand for jumping to conclusions.
The aftermath of the KCTC exercise brings better news for Seong-jae and Dong-hyun. During the official review, both soldiers receive the War Hero award after helping their regiment eliminate the Viper Unit through the tunnel operation.
Back at the outpost, Seong-jae has even more reason to celebrate. He earns a promotion to Private First Class, his smile badge issue is cleared, and Chef’s Path upgrades him to Intermediate Cook status.
The recognition spreads throughout the unit. Jae-young shows up carrying food from his brother’s restaurant and shares it with Dong-hyun and the Barrack 1 team as a reward for their hard work during training.
Not everyone is enjoying praise, though.
Ji-yong and Kwan-cheol end up facing punishment after their secret activities during training come to light. Instead of participating properly, they had hidden away to eat noodles stolen from the kitchen and smoke.
Dong-hyun soon receives his long-awaited leave. Because of his recent awards, he gets additional days off. Before leaving, he stops by the kitchen to personally thank Seong-jae. The moment has an unexpected effect inside Chef’s Path. Dong-hyun’s likeability reaches 100 points, officially making him one of Seong-jae’s colleagues within the system.
With Dong-hyun away, Kwan-cheol volunteers to help in the kitchen.
That immediately creates a new challenge.
Chef’s Path assigns Seong-jae a fresh quest: turn Kwan-cheol into a colleague. If he fails, the Intermediate Cook upgrade won’t become permanent.
Unfortunately, Kwan-cheol quickly proves why he has such a bad reputation. During meal service, he openly favors Barrack 2. He even grills meat outside approved meal hours for his preferred group, breaking regulations and upsetting the balance of the mess hall.
The situation becomes serious enough that Chef’s Path updates the mission. Seong-jae now has only seven days to make Kwan-cheol a colleague while keeping mess satisfaction above fifty percent. Failure won’t just cost him the promotion anymore. Chef’s Path itself will be terminated.
While Seong-jae struggles inside the camp, Ye-rin continues digging into suspicious food supply records.
Her investigation leads her to a troubling discovery. Several distributors with questionable records all seem connected through one contact person: Lee Min-gu.
Determined to verify the information herself, she visits a location connected to Nampyo Distribution. Instead of finding a legitimate business, she arrives at what appears to be nothing more than a junkyard. The man she encounters there happens to work with Min-gu, and he immediately reports her inquiry.
Back at the outpost, Kwan-cheol remains a constant headache. Mess satisfaction continues dropping dangerously close to the required threshold.
Seong-jae learns from his teammates that Kwan-cheol once worked in the kitchen himself. Thinking he has found common ground, Seong-jae asks him to help out.
The plan completely backfires. Rather than improving their relationship, Kwan-cheol’s hatred toward Seong-jae shoots all the way up to 100. Trying to understand why, Seong-jae turns to Jae-young for answers.
What he learns changes the entire picture.
Kwan-cheol was not always the difficult soldier everyone knows today. When he first enlisted, he was cheerful and hardworking. He was assigned to kitchen duty because his grandmother ran a hamburger business, giving him experience with food preparation. He even brought some of her hamburgers back to the base after leave.
Everything changed when his grandmother passed away.
Unable to be with her during her final days because of military service, Kwan-cheol blamed himself. The guilt slowly transformed into resentment toward the military and everyone around him.
At the same time, Dong-hyun discovers that leave is not nearly as exciting as he expected. His parents are away on vacation, and even his old friends are difficult to contact because their phone numbers have changed.
Ironically, the most exciting moment of his leave arrives when Seong-jae calls asking for information about Kwan-cheol’s grandmother’s hamburger recipe.
Using the colleague support skill, Chef’s Path manages to extract a recipe for an old-fashioned hamburger seasoned with salt.
That becomes Seong-jae’s next mission.
For several days, he experiments endlessly, trying to recreate the exact taste. Jae-young becomes the unwilling taste tester for countless burger attempts. At one point, I honestly laughed when it was revealed that he practically starts crying every time Seong-jae hands him another burger.
With only one day remaining before the deadline expires, Seong-jae finally gets it right.
Later, Kwan-cheol notices the finished burger sitting on the kitchen counter. His first instinct is to throw it away. Ever since his grandmother died, he has hated bread-based meals because they remind him of her.
Still, curiosity wins. He takes a bite. The reaction is immediate.
The familiar flavor transports him back to memories of home, where his grandmother prepared hamburgers for him in the kitchen. In his emotional recollection, a blended image of Seong-jae and his grandmother gently tells him not to hate people so much.
The scene hit surprisingly hard. Watching Kwan-cheol break down as he finishes the burger is easily one of the episode’s strongest moments.
The next morning brings a complete change.
Seong-jae arrives at the kitchen and finds Kwan-cheol already hard at work chopping cabbage. His knife skills reveal years of experience helping his grandmother.
Just like that, Kwan-cheol’s hatred drops to zero while his likeability rises to 100. Chef’s Path officially adds him as another colleague alongside Dong-hyun.
The episode then shifts toward a larger threat.
A powerful storm begins battering the region. News broadcasts warn that Typhoon Crow is approaching.
Seok-ho orders the soldiers to head out and reinforce vulnerable areas. The troops work through heavy rain, digging trenches to redirect water and prevent flooding.
Conditions rapidly worsen. The downpour becomes so intense that the soldiers are forced to retreat. Then comes the cliffhanger.
During the chaos, Mun-ik realizes he has lost his glasses. Seong-jae stays behind to help search for them. Suddenly, violent winds rip a metal sign loose from its mounting. The sign hurtles directly toward Seong-jae.
And that’s where the episode ends.
Episode 7 Review
I thought this episode did a solid job balancing character development with the larger storylines that have been building in the background.
The corruption investigation continues moving forward through Ye-rin’s discoveries, while Chef’s Path keeps raising the stakes for Seong-jae. At the same time, there are still lingering questions surrounding Seong-jae’s father and the connection between his death and the military corruption case. That storyline feels a bit quiet right now compared to everything else happening.
What continues to work well is the show’s mix of comedy and emotional drama. The humor never completely disappears, even during heavier moments, and the balance keeps the story from feeling overly dark.
Kwan-cheol’s arc takes center stage this week. Learning about his grandmother and the guilt he carried for years finally explains his behavior. The emotional payoff with the hamburger scene works well, even if his turnaround happens rather quickly. Personally, I felt the redemption came a little faster than expected, but the episode still made the emotional connection land.
I also like how Chef’s Path remains woven into the character conflicts rather than existing as a separate gimmick. The game mechanics continue pushing the story forward in creative ways.
The final storm sequence delivers exactly what a good episode ending should: a strong cliffhanger that immediately makes me want to watch the next episode.
