Episode 6 of The Legend of Kitchen Soldier throws the squad straight into KCTC training, and honestly, this episode barely slows down once it starts. Between food poisoning disasters, enemy infiltration, fried rice balls saving morale, and that ending with Min-gu, I was stressed the entire time.
The episode opens with the soldiers at Ganglim post doing their morning exercises. Seong-jae tells Mun-ik that he wants to do well during the upcoming training so he can level up. Mun-ik immediately crushes his confidence by reminding him that they’ll be facing the infamous Viper Unit, a team known for acting exactly like real North Korean forces during KCTC simulations.
Meanwhile, Dong-hyun is in a terrible mood because his leave got cancelled. He snaps at Seong-jae for celebrating a cooking skill upgrade, but the second he tastes Seong-jae’s food, his anger completely disappears. That tiny moment was hilarious.
At the same time, Seok-ho keeps watching Ye-rin from his office. Even though the battalion commander warned him not to get too involved with her because she could become a burden, he still clearly worries about her.
Since KCTC is designed to feel like actual wartime conditions, Dong-hyun and Seong-jae are forced to cook using an ancient trailer kitchen. Seung-woo warns them that under no circumstances can they abandon the kitchen during training. Apparently, the last time cooks ran away, the soldiers were stuck eating hardtack, and morale completely collapsed.
The unit heads into the forest and sets up a temporary base camp. Right away, things go badly for Seong-jae and Dong-hyun. The old trailer barely works, and they struggle just to start a fire. After all that effort, their first meal ends up causing food poisoning across the camp.
The entire base turns chaotic as soldiers rush for the washrooms while Dong-hyun and Seong-jae get yelled at. Things somehow get even worse when the Viper Unit tracks down their location during the confusion and wipes out several soldiers, including Kwan-cheol and Ji-yong.
Seok-ho completely panics after the attack. You can see the uncertainty spreading through the soldiers because their commander looks lost. Thankfully, Ye-rin steps in quickly and helps organize the evacuation before things spiral further out of control.
After relocating to a new area, everyone is exhausted and starving. Chef’s Path suddenly gives Seong-jae a new mission: improve the soldiers’ morale by satisfying their hunger.
That night, while Mun-ik and Sang-wook stand guard, an enemy infiltrator disguised as a civilian approaches the base pretending to collect trash. Mun-ik thinks they should report him immediately, but Sang-wook brushes it off and lets him approach.
The infiltrator enters the camp while most of the soldiers are asleep. Dong-hyun assumes the man is harmless, but Seong-jae notices something strange through his favorability meter. The man seems way too excited for an ordinary civilian.
Seong-jae points his gun at him and orders him to stop. Right when Dong-hyun tries convincing him to relax, Ye-rin arrives and insists on searching the man. They discover detonators hidden in his pocket, proving Seong-jae was right all along.
Chun-ik absolutely tears into the soldiers afterward for being careless enough to let an enemy walk straight into camp. Mun-ik and Sang-wook are informed they’ll face disciplinary punishment after the training ends.
Ironically, Chun-ik is still dealing with stomach issues from the food poisoning. He runs into the woods to relieve himself and ends up getting eliminated there. I actually laughed at how sudden that scene was.
With Chun-ik gone, Min-gu temporarily takes command.
Things continue getting worse for the unit because all the contaminated food supplies were thrown away after the poisoning incident. They were supposed to receive replacement rations, but the Viper Unit attacks the delivery convoy before it reaches them.
Then the trailer kitchen completely breaks down.
At this point, the soldiers barely have food, no functioning kitchen, and morale is sinking fast. Seong-jae suggests retrieving the stolen supplies themselves. Ye-rin supports the idea, and the mission team heads out with Jae-young leading the operation.
They eventually locate both the supply truck and the Viper Unit transporting the stolen rations. Dong-hyun and Jae-young create a distraction while Ye-rin and Seong-jae move in for an ambush. Everything almost falls apart when a sniper targets them, but Jae-young manages to locate and eliminate him thanks to his experience.
The team successfully brings the supplies back to base, but instead of praise, they get punished for leaving camp without informing the acting commander.
Seok-ho actually tries defending them against Min-gu, but the second Chun-ik returns, he immediately backs down. Still, his concern for Ye-rin becomes painfully obvious, and Jae-young, Dong-hyun, and Seong-jae all start noticing it too.
After retrieving the supplies, Chef’s Path unlocks a new ingredient called Masittashi. Seong-jae and Dong-hyun use it to make rice balls, but the soldiers still hate the food. Kwan-cheol, somehow back after being “killed” earlier in training, throws his rice ball away, and it rolls into a tunnel where an enemy soldier secretly picks it up.
Morale keeps dropping, and Seong-jae starts worrying that he’ll fail his quest. Then he remembers something Dong-hyun said earlier: soldiers love fried food no matter what it tastes like.
So Seong-jae decides to fry the rice balls instead.
Seok-ho takes the first bite, and his reaction is honestly one of the funniest moments in the episode. The flavors hit him so hard that it feels like a K-pop idol group is singing inside his mouth. Somehow ridiculous, somehow perfect.
The fried rice balls become an instant success and finally restore morale throughout the camp.
Later that night, Seong-jae catches Kwan-cheol forcing Sang-wook to steal extra rations from the kitchen supply. The confrontation escalates, and Kwan-cheol drags Seong-jae into the woods.
When Kwan-cheol suddenly raises his arm, Seong-jae flinches and accidentally activates Chef’s Eye. That ability reveals something hidden underground nearby: the discarded rice ball that the enemy soldier had picked up earlier.
Seong-jae realizes the Viper Unit must be hiding nearby. He rushes back to inform Ye-rin, and together they launch a surprise attack that successfully wipes out the Viper Unit and wins the KCTC training.
Just when things finally seem over, the episode drops its biggest twist.
Ye-rin notices Seong-jae has disappeared. Lost in the darkness, he accidentally wanders into an abandoned base camp and overhears someone making a secret phone call.
The mysterious soldier says there’s nobody left who can interfere anymore, so the person on the other end should quietly finish the deal. When asked about Ye-rin, he says she was moved to the outpost specifically so she wouldn’t become a problem. He even offers to “take care” of her if necessary.
Then he turns around.
It’s Min-gu.
That reveal completely changed the atmosphere of the episode for me. Up until then, there had been hints about corruption, but hearing Min-gu casually talk like that made everything feel much darker.
Seong-jae accidentally makes a noise while hiding, and Min-gu immediately starts chasing him through the forest. The final moments are intense. Seong-jae hides by hanging from a branch near a cliff edge, trying not to get spotted. After Min-gu walks away, Seong-jae attempts to pull himself up, but the branch suddenly snaps.
The episode ends with him dangling over the cliff for dear life.
Review
I thought this was one of the strongest episodes so far because it balanced comedy and tension really well. The training setup gave the story a lot of energy, and there was always another disaster waiting around the corner.
The kitchen chaos alone was entertaining enough, but the episode also pushed Seong-jae forward again as a character. He keeps getting thrown into situations he’s completely unprepared for, yet somehow adapts every single time. Watching him slowly become more dependable has been one of the best parts of the series.
The fried rice ball scene was ridiculous in the best way possible. After all the tension from the failed meals, infiltration scare, and supply shortage, that moment felt like the episode finally allowed everyone to breathe for a second.
At the same time, the story is clearly building something much bigger with Min-gu and the corruption inside the military camp. The phone call raised so many questions. Who exactly is involved? What “deal” are they covering up? And how many people have already been silenced?
That cliffhanger was brutal. There’s no way I’m stopping at Episode 6 after that ending.
