Reborn Rookie Episode 1 Recap: Jun-hyeon’s Football Dream Ends in Tragedy

Reborn Rookie Episode 1 Recap & Review: A Football Dream Shattered by a Powerful Family

Before Reborn Rookie gets to its body-swap twist, Episode 1 lays the groundwork for a clash between two men from completely different worlds. Kang Yong-ho (Son Hyun-joo) is the legendary chairman of Choiseong Group, a business empire he built himself, earning him the nickname “God of Business.” Meanwhile, Hwang Jun-hyeon (Lee Jun-young) is a young soccer player whose future finally looks bright after joining League 1 side FC Choiseong.

Neither man knows it yet, but a tragic accident will soon connect their lives in the most unexpected way. What follows is a mix of corporate intrigue, family rivalry, and personal heartbreak that ultimately leads to one of the drama’s biggest twists: the chairman and the athlete waking up in each other’s bodies.

Here’s everything that happened in Reborn Rookie Episode 1.

Reborn Rookie Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 introduces Kang Yong-ho, the chairman of Choiseong Group, during a drive in his sports car. Frustrated by a battery issue, he vents his disappointment about the people around him and complains that there is no one he can truly depend on in business. He immediately asks his trusted secretary, Sang-jae, to arrange a meeting with the company’s executives.

At the same time, young football player Hwang Jun-hyeon receives exciting news. He officially signs with FC Choiseong, a League 1 club, and begins training for what should be the biggest opportunity of his career.

Back at Choiseong Group, Yong-ho shocks everyone by announcing his intention to retire. His twin children, Kang Jae-gyeong and Kang Jae-seong, are caught off guard, but neither openly challenges the decision. Instead, both quietly begin calculating what this means for their future.

Yong-ho doesn’t hide his disappointment. He criticizes both the executives and his children for thinking only about themselves. He explains that he hasn’t chosen a successor yet and will make his decision later.

Once the meeting ends, conversations immediately turn toward the future leadership of the company. The executives privately question whether either twin is capable of taking over. Meanwhile, Jae-gyeong and Jae-seong argue among themselves, each convinced they deserve the position more than the other.

Yong-ho later tells them that he will spend the next month observing their actions before making a final decision. The announcement only fuels the rivalry, as both siblings begin searching for ways to gain an advantage.

Privately, Yong-ho admits to Sang-jae that he doesn’t fully trust either child with complete control of the company.

That evening, the family gathers for dinner. Yong-ho’s second wife, Seon-hee, is clearly troubled by the retirement announcement. While she worries about what comes next, the twins continue discussing business and succession plans at the dinner table despite her attempts to stop them.

Not long afterward, Sang-jae urgently brings Yong-ho to a company workshop. There, he reveals a secret that leaves the chairman deeply disappointed. Both twins have allegedly hidden slush funds in offshore accounts. Although furious, Yong-ho decides to keep the information quiet for the moment.

Elsewhere, Seon-hee calls her oldest daughter, Bang-geul. Believing her daughter is still living in New York, she asks her to return home. Bang-geul refuses and quickly ends the call. What Seon-hee doesn’t know is that Bang-geul is already in South Korea, quietly working as an intern.

That same night, events begin moving in a dangerous direction.

After receiving a tip from an employee, Jae-gyeong and Jae-seong sneak into the workshop. They access the dashcam footage from Yong-ho’s vehicle, hoping to discover what their father discussed with Sang-jae. When they realize Yong-ho is about to return, Jae-gyeong orders her brother to drive the vehicle away. Later, an employee lies to Yong-ho and claims the car was simply sent for repairs.

Meanwhile, Jun-hyeon calls his grandmother, Ok-sun, at her nursing home. He excitedly tells her that he has joined FC Choiseong. Because of her dementia, she initially struggles to recognize him. The moment she sees his football jersey, however, everything changes. She recognizes her grandson and proudly congratulates him.

It should have been one of the happiest moments of his life.

Instead, tragedy strikes.

While speaking to his grandmother and promising to visit her soon, Jun-hyeon is hit by Yong-ho’s car. Jae-seong is behind the wheel. Distracted by both his sister’s phone call and the dashcam recording, he runs a traffic signal and causes the accident.

My jaw dropped at how careless this entire sequence was.

The twins immediately use their influence and money to cover up what happened. CCTV evidence disappears, and the incident is buried before investigators can properly examine it.

At the hospital, Jun-hyeon receives devastating news. His injured knee requires surgery. Over the following days, he learns just how serious the damage is. The football career he worked so hard to build is suddenly hanging by a thread.

The emotional weight of these scenes really lands. Jun-hyeon isn’t only worried about football. He’s terrified that he can no longer fulfill his grandmother’s hopes or provide support for her.

Although he starts rehabilitation, even walking becomes difficult.

As if that weren’t enough, FC Choiseong informs him that he must pay a contractual penalty. Looking for justice, Jun-hyeon reports the incident to the police, only to discover that the CCTV footage has vanished.

Just when things seem hopeless, one of Ok-sun’s friends tells him that the phone conversation he had with his grandmother on the night of the accident was recorded.

Using that clue, Jun-hyeon traces the vehicle back to Kang Yong-ho and confronts him directly.

He demands an apology.

Instead of apologizing, Yong-ho offers compensation. Believing his children are responsible, he promises to waive the contract penalty and asks for the recording in exchange.

Jun-hyeon refuses.

Yong-ho then hands him a blank check and tells him to write down whatever amount he believes his life is worth.

The offer only makes Jun-hyeon angrier, and he storms out.

Later, reality catches up with him. He realizes he desperately needs money to care for his grandmother. Reluctantly, he fills out the check and returns to the company.

At the same time, the twins finally confess their involvement in the accident to Yong-ho. His response is immediate. He threatens to expose everything to the board and remove both of them from their positions.

Panicked, Jae-seong runs after his father. What happens next changes everything.

During the confrontation, Jae-seong accidentally causes Yong-ho to fall down a flight of stairs. At that exact moment, Jun-hyeon is arriving with the completed check. Yong-ho falls directly onto him, and the two collide headfirst.

When Yong-ho wakes up in the hospital, he discovers something impossible. His consciousness is now inside Jun-hyeon’s body.

Meanwhile, Yong-ho’s original body remains in a coma.

As hospital staff deal with the aftermath, Seon-hee speaks with the twins. Rather than taking responsibility, the siblings shift the blame onto their father. News of the incident soon spreads online, creating even more trouble for the family.

Now trapped inside Jun-hyeon’s body, Yong-ho finds himself standing outside his own hospital room. There, he overhears executives criticizing him behind his back. Even worse, he hears the twins blaming him for everything in front of company officials.

The betrayal enrages him.

Desperate to reclaim his original body, he repeatedly attempts to return to it.

Unfortunately, his efforts only leave him with a concussion.

Episode 1 ends with Yong-ho stuck inside Jun-hyeon’s body and no clear way to reverse what has happened.

Episode 1 Review

After watching the premiere, I’m still not sure whether Reborn Rookie wants to be a serious corporate drama, a revenge story, or something much more outrageous. Right now, it feels like a mix of all three.

The strongest part of the episode is easily Jun-hyeon’s storyline. Watching his football dream collapse because of someone else’s recklessness was frustrating and heartbreaking. His scenes with Ok-sun added genuine emotion, especially before the accident changed everything.

The twin siblings also make strong first impressions, though not in a positive way. Their willingness to cover up the hit-and-run and protect themselves at any cost immediately establishes them as major obstacles moving forward. Jae-seong’s careless driving was particularly infuriating to watch.

The biggest question going into Episode 2 is how Yong-ho will operate while trapped inside Jun-hyeon’s body. At the same time, Jun-hyeon’s consciousness remains inside Yong-ho’s comatose body, creating a setup that could lead to all kinds of complications.

Bang-geul’s secret presence in South Korea is another storyline worth keeping an eye on. The episode clearly positions her as an important figure in the family conflict, especially considering the threat she may pose to the twins’ inheritance plans.

Overall, Episode 1 delivers a lot of setup, several shocking twists, and a body-swap cliffhanger that completely changes the direction of the story. Whether the drama can balance its corporate intrigue, family conflict, and supernatural premise remains to be seen, but the premiere certainly gives viewers plenty to talk about.
