Episode 3 of The Legend of Kitchen Soldier opens with Seong-jae receiving a sudden notification from the mysterious Chef’s Path system. According to the game, his culinary route has officially ended, leaving him confused and frustrated before his kitchen journey has even properly begun.
Elsewhere, Kwan-cheol and Ji-yong are busy during their night patrol, joking about how they plan to make Seong-jae suffer once he gets transferred to TOD duty. Their conversation is interrupted when a mysterious stranger suddenly appears asking for help.
The soldiers quickly realize the man is from North Korea. After getting caught in a storm, he accidentally drifted onto South Korean shores. Despite the dangerous situation, the man repeatedly insists that he has no intention of defecting and only wants to return home.
Back at the base, the unexpected arrival creates immediate tension among the officers. Seok-ho sees the situation as a career-changing opportunity, while Jae-young worries that mishandling the case could lead to serious punishment from higher-ups. Ye-rin takes a more practical approach and suggests they first confirm the man’s identity before making any rash decisions.
Ye-rin tries to calm the North Korean man down by offering him water, but he refuses everything and keeps demanding to be sent back. It soon becomes obvious that he is starving, though he stubbornly denies it. Wanting to impress him, Seok-ho orders all kinds of expensive food, but the man refuses every dish placed in front of him.
Then Ye-rin suddenly remembers the pork cutlet Seong-jae made earlier.
Unfortunately, they almost lose the meal when Dong-hyun nearly devours it first. Once they finally place the pork cutlet in front of the North Korean soldier, everything changes instantly.
The moment he takes a bite, the atmosphere transforms into pure comedy. In his imagination, the simple pork cutlet becomes a grand musical performance. Lights flash, music explodes into the background, and he emotionally sings about the unbelievable taste of South Korean pork cutlets as if he has ascended into another dimension entirely.
Just as his dramatic food revelation reaches its peak, officials from headquarters storm into the room. Hearing loud screaming from outside, they assume the man is being tortured during interrogation.
Instead, they find him frozen in place, emotionally overwhelmed by how delicious the meal is.
For him, Seong-jae’s cooking represents freedom itself.
The man, revealed to be Kim Min-ho, is later escorted toward waiting government vehicles. Before leaving, he asks to meet the soldier responsible for the pork cutlet. Ye-rin calls Seong-jae forward, and Min-ho sincerely thanks him for giving him the best meal he has ever eaten.
The bizarre incident ends up becoming a massive success for the kitchen unit. Headquarters rewards the kitchen team with four days of leave, while Seong-jae unknowingly completes a hidden Chef’s Path quest connected to the military chain of command. As a result, his cooking route is restored, and Seok-ho is instructed to keep him assigned to kitchen duty permanently.
Seong-jae officially receives his kitchen uniform, and the game system recognizes his role change. New recipes, cooking abilities, and skill upgrades become available to him.
Over the following days, Seong-jae throws himself into improving his abilities. He levels up his knife handling, stir-frying, frying techniques, and seasoning methods through the Chef’s Path system.
His improvements quickly change the atmosphere around the mess hall.
Instead of dragging themselves reluctantly to meals, soldiers now sprint toward the cafeteria the second mealtime begins. Plates come back empty, and leftovers completely disappear. Even Miss Jung notices something unusual when she arrives expecting leftover scraps for her pigs, only to discover the food barrels completely cleaned out.
Meanwhile, Kwan-cheol becomes increasingly bitter.
Despite discovering Kim Min-ho during patrol, the TOD soldiers receive almost no praise. Instead, all attention goes toward the kitchen team and Seong-jae’s cooking. Things get worse when news coverage about Kim Min-ho’s defection spreads publicly, with reports jokingly crediting the pork cutlet for convincing him to stay in South Korea.
Kwan-cheol’s frustration finally boils over when he corners Seong-jae and Mun-ik while they are cleaning the bathroom. He accuses the younger soldiers of becoming spoiled because the seniors treat them too kindly.
At that moment, Seong-jae’s Chef’s Path system warns him that Kwan-cheol’s hostility has reached maximum danger levels.
Kwan-cheol attempts to throw a punch, but Dong-hyun arrives just in time to intervene. He openly criticizes Kwan-cheol for taking his frustrations out on junior soldiers. Still, Dong-hyun’s concern for Seong-jae comes with his usual twisted logic. He warns Seong-jae not to get injured, not because he cares deeply, but because he refuses to let Seong-jae ruin his upcoming vacation leave.
According to Dong-hyun, if Seong-jae gets hurt, he might “turn into a beast.”
The episode shifts again when news arrives that a congressman will soon inspect the military base. Panic spreads instantly throughout the camp as soldiers rush to clean every corner of the facility.
The biggest concern, however, is the kitchen.
Rumors about terrible military food have become a national issue, and the inspection is specifically focused on meal quality.
Unfortunately, the menu for the day is braised boneless pollock, a dish infamous among soldiers for its unpleasant fishy smell and bland flavor. Whenever pollock appears on the menu, most soldiers barely touch their food.
Seok-ho and Jae-young desperately try convincing headquarters to swap the menu for chicken instead. However, Min-gu overhears the request and refuses to allow any special treatment for the inspection, forcing the kitchen to proceed with the pollock dish.
Seong-jae turns to the Chef’s Path system for help. Although the game offers improved recipes, every use drains his stamina, represented as actual lives within the system.
He first sacrifices one life helping Dong-hyun improve the chicken soup recipe.
Then he spends another life attempting to improve the pollock dish. While the flavor becomes better, the unpleasant fish smell still remains.
Determined to solve the issue, Seong-jae remembers watching his father cook a similar dish using tomato paste normally reserved for spaghetti recipes. Inspired by the memory, he retrieves the ingredient from storage. However, unlocking the upgraded recipe costs another life, exhausting all three lives granted by the game for the day.
At the same time, the congressman arrives at the base accompanied by several high-ranking commanders. After inspecting the grounds and barracks, the group finally heads toward the mess hall.
The division commander quietly reminds Seok-ho that the congressman absolutely hates fishy-smelling food. Completely unaware that headquarters refused the menu change, he confidently assures everyone that chicken has already replaced the pollock.
Naturally, panic erupts when braised boneless pollock is suddenly served instead.
The congressman’s face immediately reveals his disappointment. However, because cameras and media crews are present, he forces himself to maintain composure and begins eating anyway.
Before viewers can see the full reaction, the episode delivers one final cliffhanger.
Dong-hyun sends Seong-jae back into the kitchen to grab another bowl of rice. But after exhausting all his system stamina, Seong-jae suddenly experiences a Chef’s Path overload. The system initiates an emergency shutdown, forcing him into mandatory rest mode.
Seong-jae collapses on the spot.
The Episode Review
Episode 3 perfectly captures why The Legend of Kitchen Soldier continues to stand out among comedy K-dramas. The series somehow balances military satire, absurd gaming mechanics, emotional family memories, and ridiculous food humor all in a single episode without completely falling apart.
The pork cutlet sequence was easily the highlight. The transition from a tense North Korean defection situation into a full-blown musical fantasy was absolutely insane, but it was also incredibly funny. The tonal shift happened so suddenly that it almost felt surreal, yet the show somehow committed hard enough to make it work.
At the same time, the episode surprisingly adds emotional depth to Seong-jae’s character. His memory of his father’s cooking grounds the fantasy elements with something more personal and sincere. The Chef’s Path system may guide his abilities, but his emotional connection to food clearly comes from his family.
The growing tension with Kwan-cheol also adds a darker undercurrent beneath the comedy. His jealousy feels believable, especially as Seong-jae unintentionally becomes the center of attention within the base.
The guest appearances from veteran actors made the episode even more entertaining. Watching familiar K-drama “villain” faces share scenes together almost felt like a hidden bonus for longtime viewers.
Overall, Episode 3 delivers another wildly entertaining mix of chaos, comedy, and heart while continuing to build Seong-jae’s strange journey from ordinary soldier to legendary military chef.
