I honestly didn’t expect Episode 8 of The WONDERfools to go this hard. The finale throws almost every character into absolute chaos from the very first scene, and once things start moving, the episode barely slows down. Between exploding labs, brainwashed citizens, falling blimps, and emotional reunions, this finale felt like the show fully embraced how weird and unpredictable it wanted to be.
Chae-ni Risks Everything at the Church
The episode opens with Chae-ni and Gyeon-un trapped inside the church while the members close in around them. Gyeon-un worries about his family, but Chae-ni doesn’t waste time panicking. She uses the last coffee jelly to teleport him safely outside his house before returning to the church alone.
I actually laughed when Chae-ni tried threatening everyone with a chainsaw only for it to immediately break. That moment perfectly sums up this drama’s energy. Even during life-or-death situations, it still finds room for ridiculous comedy.
Things get worse when the churchgoers attack her, but Jun-mo and Jeon-bok suddenly storm into the church. Using the speaker system, they disrupt Ju-ran’s brainwashing spell and snap the church members out of their zombie-like state.
Dr Ha Finally Pays for What He Did
Down in the basement lab, Un-jeong finally confronts Dr Ha about the experiments that ruined his life as a child. Dr Ha refuses to admit any guilt and instead reveals his terrifying plan to spread chemicals throughout Haeseong to create more superpowered people and possibly another Child of Eternity.
That entire conversation felt disturbing because Dr Ha genuinely believed he was doing something necessary.
Un-jeong tries to kill him, but the guards intervene. Using his powers, Un-jeong redirects the bullets toward Dr Ha, killing him while also setting the lab ablaze.
Meanwhile, Chae-ni hears the explosion and immediately teleports into the burning lab to rescue survivors while desperately searching for Un-jeong.
At the same time, Ju-ran tries reviving Dr Ha using Chae-ni’s blood sample, but it doesn’t work. She contacts Ho-ran and orders her to continue the plan while hiding the truth about Dr Ha and Pal-ho’s deaths.
Elsewhere, Sang-moo manages to drag an injured Un-jeong out of the fire and urges him to escape before things get worse.
Jun-mo Falls Under Ho-ran’s Control
Outside the church, Chae-ni explains Dr Ha’s apocalypse plan to Jeon-bok and Jun-mo. But before they can react properly, Ho-ran suddenly appears and brainwashes Jun-mo along with his team.
That twist hit fast.
Ho-ran forces them to target Jeon-bok, and Chae-ni quickly teleports her away before she gets hurt. Because Chae-ni remains connected to the church, she accidentally teleports back there again, this time on a telehandler. Somehow this show manages to make even random construction equipment part of the action.
Gyeon-un Realises the Real Plan
While all this happens, Ro-bin wakes up and realizes disaster is unfolding across town.
At City Hall, preparations continue for the midnight parade celebrating the new millennium. Gyeon-un rushes there to stop Mi-hui and Cheong from attending, but neither of them listens to him. Cheong even feels embarrassed by how frantic he’s acting.
Later, Chae-ni, Ro-bin, and Gyeon-un regroup at the restaurant to figure out how to stop the apocalypse. Gyeon-un eventually pieces together Ho-ran’s real plan: the chemicals will be released during the parade when the entire town gathers together.
Chae-ni and Ro-bin begin searching for the truck carrying the chemicals, but instead they encounter Un-jeong. The problem is that Ju-ran is controlling him.
Chae-ni Refuses to Give Up on Un-jeong
Ju-ran forces Un-jeong to attack Chae-ni while Ro-bin shields her with his powers. Meanwhile, Gyeon-un stays near the parade to protect his wife and daughter.
Then he overhears the fireworks discussion and finally realizes the chemicals aren’t in a truck at all, they’re hidden inside the fireworks planned for midnight.
My jaw honestly dropped there because it suddenly connected everything together.
The episode quickly explodes into chaos. Ro-bin and Un-jeong fight while Gyeon-un races through the city trying to protect his family. Ju-ran forces Un-jeong to strangle Chae-ni, but she teleports him away to break Ho-ran’s control over him.
Ho-ran responds by brainwashing even more residents across Haeseong.
Still, Chae-ni and Un-jeong rush back to help the others.
The Entire Town Turns Into a Battlefield
Gyeon-un tells Mi-hui and Cheong to hide before returning to fight beside his friends. Together, Chae-ni, Un-jeong, Ro-bin, and Gyeon-un battle the brainwashed townspeople under Ho-ran’s control.
One of my favorite moments came when Cheong finally witnessed everything herself and realized her father really is a superhero. After spending so much of the series being dismissed, Gyeon-un finally gets recognized by the person who matters most to him.
With only thirty minutes left before midnight, the group splits up to find Ju-ran.
Gyeon-un confronts her directly, but she throws him off a building. At the same time, Ju-ran’s body begins failing from overusing her powers. She eventually collapses while coughing up blood, and Ho-ran desperately tries to save her.
Ho-ran’s Death Changes Everything
As Ju-ran weakens, the brainwashing spell finally breaks and the townspeople regain control of themselves.
But Ho-ran still refuses to stop.
Using hallucinations, she disguises herself as Chae-ni to trick Un-jeong. During the confusion, a church elder accidentally stabs Ho-ran. Once the illusion disappears, Ho-ran dies in Un-jeong’s arms while Ju-ran watches helplessly.
That scene surprisingly carried real emotional weight. For all the madness in this drama, Ho-ran’s death felt genuinely tragic.
The Final Attempt to Stop the Apocalypse
Before collapsing completely, Ju-ran casts one final spell and forces the citizens of Haeseong to gather beneath a blimp carrying the chemicals.
Un-jeong tries stopping the blimp with his powers, but he’s too weak to hold it back alone.
Chae-ni then comes up with one last desperate plan. She asks Ro-bin and Gyeon-un to launch her toward the blimp while Un-jeong promises he’ll keep her from falling.
Gyeon-un helps Chae-ni climb onto the blimp before jumping back down himself. Un-jeong catches him before he crashes, while Chae-ni teleports the blimp away at the final second.
And just like that, the apocalypse is stopped.
As midnight arrives, the people of Haeseong celebrate the beginning of the new millennium completely unaware of how close they came to disaster.
Chae-ni Returns After Disappearing
After the battle ends, Chae-ni vanishes.
Three weeks pass, and nobody knows where she went. Jeon-bok, Un-jeong, Ro-bin, and Gyeon-un all struggle with her disappearance, eventually organizing a memorial in her honor.
Then the finale pulls one final emotional moment.
Chae-ni suddenly reappears during the memorial and reunites with everyone. Un-jeong immediately rushes to find her, and the two finally embrace.
The season closes with Chae-ni, Un-jeong, Ro-bin, and Gyeon-un still together as a chaotic little superhero team.
The epilogue also reveals two major things: Un-jeong dreams of reuniting with his mother, the Church of Eternal Salvation remains under investigation, and Dr Ha somehow wakes up again inside the underground lab.
So yes, the story definitely leaves the door open for another season.
Episode 8 Review
I had a lot of fun watching this finale even when some parts made absolutely no logical sense. The show clearly cared more about energy, emotion, and chaos than realism, and honestly, I think that worked in its favor by the end.
The biggest surprise for me was how much heart the finale still managed to have underneath all the insanity. Gyeon-un protecting his family, Cheong finally seeing her father as a real hero, and the group refusing to abandon Chae-ni gave the episode emotional moments that actually landed.
I still don’t really feel strong romantic chemistry between Un-jeong and Chae-ni, but I did enjoy seeing the team dynamic survive all the destruction around them. That friendship ended up being more convincing than the romance for me.
I’m also curious about the aftermath of the chemicals Chae-ni teleported away. The finale never explains where they ended up, which feels intentional. Combined with Dr Ha waking up again, it’s obvious the writers want more story left to tell.
And honestly? I’d watch another season just to see this completely unhinged superhero group cause more chaos together.
