Sold Out On You Episode 8 Recap & Review: Matthew’s Secret Finally Changes Everything

Episode 8 of Sold Out On You starts quietly, almost peacefully. Matthew gives Ye-jin her pills for the night, and the two settle down with books before eventually falling asleep together. The pills are left untouched on the table, which already hints that Ye-jin’s emotional state is shifting whenever she’s around him.

Meanwhile, Michelle arrives in South Korea with one clear goal: stop Eric from continuing his partnership with HIT.

The next morning brings some surprisingly sweet moments. Ye-jin and Matthew play a game together, and when Matthew loses, she makes him promise to agree with everything she wants for the entire day. Honestly, their playful chemistry here was really fun to watch. After so much tension earlier in the series, these scenes finally let them act like an actual couple.

While they’re walking around hand in hand, Kwang-mo and Som-yi spot them together, making it obvious that rumors around town probably won’t stay quiet for long.

Elsewhere, Sung-mi sends Kwang-mo a photo of herself before a show. He excitedly talks about it with Jung-muk, who encourages him to support her by buying the products she’s promoting. Kwang-mo immediately does it, and this whole subplot continues to be oddly adorable.

Back at the mushroom farm, Matthew and Ye-jin spend the day working together. Ye-jin also forces him to watch a drama with her later that night. Their relationship feels soft and comfortable now, and the episode spends a lot of time letting us sit in that happiness before things eventually fall apart.

Later, Ye-jin finds Som-yi practicing a speech for the class president election. Som-yi admits she wants to become president because she hopes it’ll help her make friends. That scene honestly hurt a little. You can really feel how lonely Som-yi has been.

Since Ye-jin is naturally confident in front of people, she gives Som-yi lessons on public speaking. During their conversation, Som-yi mentions that Jin-yi once dreamed of becoming a show host. Ye-jin then tells her that HIT is currently hiring new hosts. Som-yi later rushes home and excitedly shows Jin-yi the recruitment notice.

Back on the farm, Matthew and Ye-jin continue working together until they eventually get distracted and kiss. The romantic build-up between them has been dragging for episodes, so this moment finally felt rewarding.

The following day, Som-yi prepares for her speech with Ye-jin’s help. Ye-jin gives her one final piece of advice: if Som-yi stops acting self-conscious about her mask, other people will stop focusing on it too.

At school, Som-yi follows that advice during her speech and wins the election by majority vote. Watching the other kids immediately start inviting her to hang out afterward was genuinely emotional. She finally gets the friendships she wanted.

She later sends Jin-yi photos of herself spending time with classmates and also calls Matthew to share the good news. Matthew passes the message on to Ye-jin, who looks incredibly happy hearing it.

At the same time, Ye-jin slowly starts thinking about work again. She begins looking for products that could help her return as a host. Then her father calls her, clearly worried, but Ye-jin keeps the conversation cold and distant.

When she returns to Matthew, he asks about her medication. Ye-jin finally opens up about how everything started five years earlier.

Through flashbacks, we learn that Yun-ji injured her arm and asked an inexperienced Ye-jin to replace her during a beauty show presentation for the Good Morning cream alongside Myung-hwa. Ye-jin was excited because it was her chance to debut as a host with her mother. But before that could happen, the scandal surrounding the cream exploded.

Myung-hwa publicly retired from acting, and media reports accused Ye-jin of accepting hush money. Worse, Myung-hwa believed Ye-jin betrayed her on purpose as revenge. Since her mother refused to listen, Ye-jin stopped defending herself and allowed her to believe it.

That entire backstory explains so much about why Ye-jin became obsessed with perfection. Afterward, she pushed herself endlessly because she never wanted another mistake to happen again.

In the present, Ye-jin tells Matthew that he’s the reason she managed to host beauty shows again. She thanks him for staying beside her. But Matthew suddenly looks uneasy after hearing that.

Then the episode drops another huge reveal.

A flashback shows Matthew working in the lab that developed the Good Morning cream.

My jaw honestly dropped here because the series has been hinting at some hidden connection for a while, but seeing it confirmed changes everything.

The next morning, Matthew tells Ye-jin he has something important to say. Before he can confess, Jin-yi bursts in, panicking because Som-yi needs to go to the hospital. Som-yi scratched her skin badly enough to make it bleed.

When Ye-jin shows concern, Jin-yi lashes out at her, blaming her for influencing Som-yi in the first place.

At the hospital, Jin-yi scolds Som-yi for eating processed food containing egg and flour despite her allergies. She also blames Matthew for bringing Ye-jin into town at all.

Later, Ye-jin tries apologizing, but Jin-yi tells her to leave them alone.

Matthew returns home and finds Ye-jin crying, yet he still says nothing. That silence felt frustrating because you can see the guilt eating him alive.

The following morning, Mu-woon contacts Matthew with new test results involving L’Etoile’s essence. The microbial count has officially exceeded safe levels. Eric is informed immediately.

Soon after, Ye-jin’s coworkers send her a link to a press conference where Eric publicly apologizes for the contaminated product. He takes responsibility and completely removes blame from Ye-jin. Almost instantly, an HIT executive instructs Director Dong to bring Ye-jin back.

Elsewhere, Mu-woon tries charming Ae-ra again with expensive clothes and a fancy watch, but she’s unimpressed. He later vents to Matthew, though Matthew is far too distracted to care.

Director Dong personally meets Ye-jin and asks her to return to HIT. Surprisingly, Ye-jin declines for now, saying she still needs time for herself.

That night, Ye-jin sleepwalks while trying to go apologize to Som-yi. Matthew gently holds and comforts her, and honestly, scenes like this make the final conflict even more painful because you can tell they genuinely care about each other.

The next morning feels calm again. They share breakfast, and Ye-jin asks Matthew to come home early so they can cook dinner together later.

Meanwhile at L’Etoile, Eric faces backlash from Michelle and the board members. He’s also shocked to hear Ye-jin turned down HIT’s offer.

Later, Kwang-mo tells Matthew that Ye-jin refused to return to work after hearing the news from Sung-mi. Matthew looks genuinely surprised.

Ye-jin then meets Eric herself and thanks him for protecting her during the press conference. Eric admits he’s worried but avoids pressuring her about work. Instead, he later confronts Matthew directly and accuses him of being the reason Ye-jin refuses to move forward.

Back at home, Ye-jin accidentally discovers documents connected to Matthew’s former workplace, The USU.

At the same time, Som-yi tells Jin-yi that Ye-jin helped her become class president and finally make friends. Jin-yi softens slightly and thanks Ye-jin for helping Som-yi, but she still asks Ye-jin to leave town.

Then comes the emotional explosion the entire episode has been building toward.

When Ye-jin returns home, Matthew finally confesses that he worked on the Good Morning cream. The scandal was connected to him, not her. He tells Ye-jin she should return to HIT now that the truth is surfacing.

Ye-jin is devastated. She asks why he hid this from her and why he brought her here at all.

Matthew admits he approached her because he felt guilty for ruining her life. Everything he did was driven by guilt and responsibility.

Ye-jin calls him out for lying to her the entire time, but instead of comforting her, Matthew pushes her away emotionally and claims she’s suffocating him.

That final scene felt brutal to watch.

Review

Episode 8 packs together romance, guilt, emotional healing, and melodrama all at once. Some parts worked incredibly well for me, while others felt frustrating in ways the show probably didn’t intend.

The strongest section of the episode is easily the first half. Watching Matthew and Ye-jin finally enjoy normal couple moments was satisfying after all the emotional tension between them. Their scenes at the mushroom farm felt warm and relaxed, and the kiss scene was one of the episode’s highlights.

I also really loved the storyline involving Som-yi. Her struggle to make friends has quietly become one of the show’s most emotional arcs. Seeing her win class president and finally connect with other kids was genuinely heartwarming.

The episode also does a good job connecting Ye-jin’s present struggles to the Good Morning cream scandal from five years ago. Her trauma suddenly makes much more sense after learning how isolated and blamed she became.

Then the story shifts hard into angst.

Matthew’s connection to the cream scandal is a strong twist because it completely changes the meaning behind his relationship with Ye-jin. Suddenly, all of his kindness carries guilt underneath it.

That said, the ending itself felt a little too harsh for me. Matthew pushing Ye-jin away and telling her she’s suffocating him comes across very suddenly, especially after spending the entire episode showing how deeply he cares about her. I understood what the writers were aiming for emotionally, but the transition still felt abrupt.

Eric and Matthew also spend a lot of time arguing over what’s best for Ye-jin, and I wasn’t fully convinced by that angle either. Ye-jin has been making her own choices throughout the episode, especially when she refused to return to HIT, so the conflict sometimes treats her like she has no agency.

Still, even with those issues, the episode stays incredibly watchable. The emotional reveals land, the tension keeps building naturally, and the final confession completely changes the direction of the story heading into the next episode.
